A Piece of Cake

生活是非常的奇特, 你永远猜不出明天会发生什么事!

Life is a mystery and you never know what is waiting for you around the corner.

At least I don’t. When I was around 7 I used to look at the passing bicycles around a busy main road beside our apartment block. When can I have one of those bicycles so that I don’t have to walk nearly an hour to school each day? How good if I can find a job to sell ice blocks so that I can have one any time I like, to keep me cool from this dreadful heat!

I did own a bicycle when I was second year in University and it was rusty old thing. It was given to me by a friend. After I redecorated it with a new shopping basket, a new bell and two new tyres, it was stolen.

I never had a chance to sell ice blocks, mainly because I tried hard to keep away from hot places whenever I could. I trained as an Engineer, but I never worked with passion. I liked to talk and get involved with people, just didn’t know how. In a world now that every job needs a thousand qualifications my career change looked bleak.

One day this interpreter idea came to me. You only need to be good at speaking both English and Mandarin - piece of cake for me. Writing, not bad either. I went for some training classes and passed the Naati paraprofessional interpreter test with ease. I registered with Speak Your Language. Luckily enough, they already have started to give me at least two on call jobs a day and occasional on site jobs too. I might sacrifice my salary a bit, but it was all worthwhile. Hey, I am now talking to real people, not a machine.

A piece of cake, as they said.
